Textron Defense
Systems has been a pioneer and technology leader in
high power laser research and development for nearly
a half-century. The work that began during the sixties,
seventies and eighties at the former Avco Everett Research
Laboratory focused on weapon-class gas laser development
and demonstrated many well-known landmark laser devices.
During the nineties and ongoing today, we continue to
build on that heritage by focusing on the development
of breakthrough solid-state laser concepts to provide
the warfighter with compact, affordable, and rugged
Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) systems capable of withstanding
the most severe operational and environmental battlefield
conditions.
That breakthrough is evident in a concept
known as ThinZag® -- a technology developed by Textron Defense Systems that led to a contact award by the Department
of Defense under the Joint High Powered Solid State
Laser (J-HPSSL) program.
While the military currently uses lasers
to guide missiles in combat an to defend aircraft from
shoulder launched missiles, high energy lasers themselves
will be used as weapons of the future precision
strike weapons that limit collateral damage.
Textron Defense Systems is recognized in the
laser industry as the champion for large-scale single
module scaling by using ceramic laser gain material,
enabling fieldable system architectures that are simpler
and more compact.
