Wilmington,
MA April 21, 2009 - Textron Defense Systems,
an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc.
(NYSE: TXT) company, will hold its second annual company-wide
Earth Day celebration on Wednesday, April 22. The celebration
will encourage employees to make the small contributions
that add up to a much cleaner, greener environment.
The company expects up to 50 employees to spend roughly
an hour each working on various clean-up projects in
the vicinity. Primary among these is grooming the Textron
Ball Field, which the town of Wilmington utilizes for
soccer and Little League baseball games.
Employees also will make a difference
in their own work areas by ramping up their contributions
to the company’s recycling program. Launched at this
time last year, the program allows employees to recycle
batteries, paper, cardboard, plastic, glass and aluminum
to reduce the amount of these recoverable materials
that end up in the local landfill. In fact, the company
distributed individual recycling bins to all employees
at the first annual Earth Day celebration last year.
In 2008, employees recycled 39.32 tons of these materials.
So far this year, another 6.26 tons have been recycled
and the company hopes to increase its total yearly amount
by five tons over the 2008 results.
Earth Day activities also will extend
beyond that day with outreach planned at the Woburn
Street School in early May. The company has worked with
the school’s students for more than a year, raising
awareness on the importance of taking care of the environment.
“Textron Defense Systems employees
care about giving back to their local and global communities,”
explains Senior Vice President and General Manager Mark
Catizone. “It is important to us that we mark Earth
Day by taking the time to enhance the grounds that our
neighbors play in, as well as taking bold steps to reduce,
reuse and recycle in our work areas to benefit our global
community.”
