Wilmington, MA.– September 14,
2006 - – Textron Systems
Corporation, a Textron (NYSE:TXT) Inc. company, announced
today that its Sensor Fuzed Weapon (SFW) was successfully
demonstrated against a wide variety of non-operating (unheated)
stationary targets in tests conducted at the C52 test
range at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. SFW engaged and
defeated an air defense site and parked aircraft, as well
as lightly to heavily armored vehicles all with a single
weapon.
The test findings concluded that
all 40 Skeet warheads dispensed by the submunition either
exploded during target engagement or self-destructed, in
accordance with the weapon's design. According to Tom Harrington,
Textron Systems, vice president, airborne products, "The
power and versatility of this weapon has been proven time
and again. This test illustrates clearly how the SFW can
achieve a high level of effects in a single pass - in one
mission - against multiple and varied targets, and still
leave behind a clean battlefield. "
According to reports by the Systems Program Office (SPO),
the SFW's test performance "exceeded expectations".
They further indicated that the weapon functioned properly
and achieved hits against a wide array of cold (non-operating)
targets in a single mission.
About the Sensor Fuzed Weapon
Known as CBU-97 and CBU-105, Textron Systems' Sensor Fuzed
Weapon is the first and only combat-proven smart area weapon
of its kind in U.S. Air Force inventory designed to accurately
detect and defeat multiple stationary or moving land &
maritime threat targets. SFW's demonstrated lethality against
armor makes CBU-105 an important force-multiplying capability
for the warfighter. Its 40 smart Skeet warheads have both
a hard and soft target capability and are equipped with
two self-destruct modes and a self-neutralization feature
to leave no hazardous unexploded ordnance on the ground,
resulting in a clean battlefield.
